It is with great sadness that the Royal Family of England announces the passing of His Royal Highness Edward VIII on May 28, 1972. Edward was the eldest child of King George V and Queen Mary and the beloved sibling of King George VI, who preceded him on the throne from 1936 until his abdication in December 1936. Edward was born on June 23, 1894 and was associated with charitable causes from a young age. At the start of World War I, Edward joined the British Army, even though his father hoped he would stay out of the line of duty. During his short military service, he was presented with a personal gift from the French president, Raymond Poincaré. This gift was a ruby and diamond clip, set with the insignia of the Most Noble Order of the Garter. Throughout his life, Edward was a well-regarded public figure who was passionate about social reform. This commitment to greater equality was an enduring legacy Edward left behind. His death marks the end of a life full of significant accomplishments. He will be remembered for his steadfast commitment to philanthropy and longstanding dedication to England. Edward passed away at the age of 77 on May 28, 1972. He is preceded in death by his father, King George V; his mother, Queen Mary; and his brother, King George VI. He is survived by other members of the Royal Family. The life and accomplishments of Edward VIII will be long remembered and celebrated.
