Edward Bernays, one of the foremost authorities on public relations and propaganda, passed away at the age of 103 on 1995-03-09 00:00:00 UTC. He was born in Vienna, Austria in 1891, and emigrated to the United States in 1905. A nephew of Sigmund Freud, Bernays was considered the father of public relations, introducing the term in the 1920s and helping to popularize the field in the fields of business and politics. Over the course of his career, he used the principles of psychology and sociology to analyze how individuals and groups react to various stimuli and used those analyses to help his business and government clients influence and shape public opinion. This included numerous winning campaigns for both public and private clients. Throughout his life, Bernays remained an influential figure in public relations and communications, writing several books and continuing to advise clients until his death in 1995. He was also a professor of public relations at both New York University and Harvard Business School. He is remembered for his work in revolutionizing the fields of public relations, marketing, and government communications, and his enormous influence will continue to be felt in these areas for years to come.
