Edie Sedgwick, an influential socialite and actress of the 1960s, died on November 16 1971 at the age of 28 following complications from a long history of mental health and substance abuse challenges. Born in 1943 in Santa Barbara, California, Sedgwick first rose to fame as a regular on Andy Warhol’s scene. At the time she was widely considered a “It Girl” of the period and is now remembered as one of its most recognizable stars. She appeared in a handful of Warhol films, including ”Chelsea Girls,” ”Beauty #2,” and ”More Milk, Yvette.” After her time with Warhol, she went on to appear in a number of films and television shows. Though her career was short-lived, her influence in the fashion community was long-lasting. Throughout her life she attracted attention from the political and entertainment worlds. As recently as 2013, she was featured in publications focused on her impact on fashion and culture and there have been several books, documentaries, films, and photography exhibitions dedicated to her memory. Sedgwick’s death was ruled a suicide due to accidental overdose. However, the cause of her death will remain highly contested and debated. Her death was a significant event for many fans of the era, and will remain an important part of its history and legacy.
