American actor Eddie Albert, best known for his role as Oliver Wendall Douglas on the hit 1960s sitcom Green Acres, passed away on May 26, 2005, at the age of 99. Born Edward Albert Heimberger in Rock Island, Illinois in 1906, Eddie Albert enjoyed a long and varied career in the entertainment industry. He moved to California as a young man and began to pursue a career in acting. After some small roles, he got his big break when he was cast opposite actress Grace Moore in the 1935 movie One Night of Love. After solidifying his reputation in film, Albert went on to find success on television. He acted in various series throughout the 1950s, but it was his role as Oliver Wendall Douglas on Green Acres that he will be best remembered. The show aired on CBS from 1965 to 1971, and was one of the most popular sitcoms of its time. Albert's incredible longevity in Hollywood was marked by numerous accolades throughout his career. He was nominated for an Oscar for his role in the 1948 drama The Yellow Rose. He also received five Golden Globe nominations and won an Emmy in the 1975-76 season for his role in NBC's The Time Machine. In addition to his acting career, Albert had an interest in environmental advocacy and worked to protect animal rights. Albert is survived by four children, five grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.
