Ed Koch (December 12, 1924 – February 1, 2013) was an American political, media, and business figure from New York, New York. A Democrat, he served in the United States House of Representatives from 1969 to 1977, representing New York’s 17th Congressional District. In 1977, Koch was elected mayor of the City of New York, becoming the 105th person to hold the office. He is remembered as being Mayor of a city in economic peril recovering, strong and solvent once again. During his tenure, he advocated for improving the city’s infrastructure, increasing its housing stock, and maintaining support system for the homeless. Koch left office in 1989 and continued to be actively involved in numerous civic, business, philanthropic, and media related activities. He wrote several books, managed a consulting firm and ultimately made his way into movies, television, and theater. He made guest appearances on a number of television shows such as 'The People’s Court' and 'The Muppet Show.' In 2005, Koch was honored by The David S. Wyman Institute for Holocaust Studies for his work to educate the public about Holocaust history. This honor highlighted him as a leader in the fight against anti-Semitism. Koch passed away on February 1, 2013, at the age of 88. He was survived by his nephews Jeffrey and Adam Koch.
