It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Dina Pathak, artist, entertainer, and humanitarian, at the age of 80. Born in India in 1922, Dina Pathak grew up in a chawl in Dadar, Bombay, later attending Elphinstone College and enrolling to study at Ruparel College. While at Ruparel, Dina developed a passion for playing the harmonium, and was encouraged by her mother to pursue her talent in violin and music as well. Dina is best known as a prolific and iconic star of stage and screen in a career spanning over five decades. Despite being accepted into the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts in London, Dina chose to remain in India to pursue her art, and is credited as being one of the foremost proponents in the establishment of the theatre movement in modern India. In the later decades of her life, Dina was active in supporting several social justice causes, such as the Chipko Movement of the 70s. In 1987, she was awarded Best Actress at the National Film Awards for her role in Mirch Masala. Dina will be remembered by many for her work in films such as Bazaar, Chitchor, Ek Hi Bhool, Chit Chor, Buddhadeb Dasgupta's Memories of Indira Gandhi, and several plays. Dina is survived by her three sons. She will be sorely missed by all who knew her.
