Richard Claxton Gregory, also known as Dick Gregory, passed away on August 19, 2017, at the age of 84. Born in St. Louis, Missouri in 1932, Gregory rose to national prominence as an educator, healthcare advocate, and civil rights activist. He was an influential leader who worked through his comedic talents to bring about awareness and change. In addition to stand-up comedy, Gregory was a tireless human rights advocate, particularly for African Americans. He marched with Martin Luther King Jr., served on the advisory board of National CORE, survived a hunger strike in Washington D.C., in support of congressional voting for D.C., and wrote books including Nissan Revolution and Callus On My Soul. A legend of social and cultural commentary, Gregory was a comic, educator, health advocate, and activist whose words and hard work still reverberates throughout the nation and world. He will be remembered for his work on civil rights and his ability to foster meaningful political dialogue by uses of humor. Richard Claxton Gregory is survived by seven children and their families. He will be dearly missed.
