She was well-known for her iconic portrayals of the secret agent Emma Peel in the 1960s TV series The Avengers, Lady Holiday in On Her Majesty's Secret Service, and Olenna Tyrell in HBO's Game of Thrones. Her many stage credits included playing Medea and Madame de Volanges in Les Liaisons Dangereuses. She was appointed a Dame of the British Empire in 1994 in recognition of her services to drama.
