Dian Fossey, one of the world's most famous and revered zoologists, was found dead in her cabin in Rwanda, Africa on December 27th 1985. She was 53-years-old. Dian was born in San Francisco, California in 1932 and developed a passion for animals and conservation early in life. She became known world-wide for her research, conducted from her cabin in the Serengeti, of the mountain gorillas of the Virungas in Zaire and Rwanda. During her years of research, she became an active part of the local communities in which she lived and worked. Her ground-breaking and inspiring work with these endangered animals has left a lasting legacy on the scientific work that has followed. Dian Fossey will be remembered for protecting and saving a species on the brink of extinction, and for her incredible contributions to the fields of primatology, anthropology, and conservation. Her work is still celebrated and enjoyed by all who have been inspired by her dedication to the cause. She will be deeply missed.
