Dhirajlal Hirachand Ambani (1933-2002), commonly known as Dhirubhai Ambani, passed away on July 6th 2002 at the age of 69. Dhirubhai was born into a Gujarati family in Chorwad, Gujarat, India in 1933. After finishing school in Chorwad, he moved to Aden, Yemen, to help support his family. During his brief stay he worked as a clerk in a store. However, in 1958 he returned to India to start his own business in spices. This marked the beginning of what would quickly become a huge success story. Dhirubhai went on to create Reliance Industries Limited (RIL), a diversified conglomerate that included petroleum, petrochemicals, power, and energy sectors. This company skyrocketed him to the position of one of India’s greatest entrepreneurs and business leaders. His success was due to his innovative and groundbreaking business techniques and strategies, such as backward integration, which allowed Reliance to develop its products and services from raw material production to retail network. He was a philanthropist and a great leader, and was widely respected by many in the business world. Inrecognitionofhis contributions, he received several awards, including the Padma Vibhushan, India’s second highest civilian award. Dhirubhai was survived by his wife, Kokilaben Ambani, and his two sons Anil and Mukesh Ambani. His legacy will continue through his sons.
