Denny Doherty, who died peacefully on January 19, 2007, at the age of 66, was a singer, songwriter, actor, and member of the Canadian 1960s rock group The Mamas & The Papas.
Doherty was born and raised in Halifax, Nova Scotia, and first gained fame as part of the folk music group The Halifax Three. He went on to form The Mamas & The Papas in 1965 in Los Angeles, California, alongside John Phillips, Michelle Phillips, and Cass Elliot.
The group rose to fame in the mid-1960s, releasing hit singles including “California Dreamin'”, “Monday, Monday” and “I Saw Her Again Last Night”, and their third album “The Mamas & the Papas Deliver”, which reached number one on the US Billboard charts.
Doherty's career extended beyond the Mamas & the Papas; he had an extensive acting career, appearing on stage, in movies and television shows including “The Mod Squad”, “Medical Center”, and “The Hardy Boys/Nancy Drew Mysteries”.
In later years, Doherty continued to perform, touring with the reformed Mamas & the Papas from 1998 to 2001, and remaining a crucial part of the band until their final performance in 2004.
He is remembered as a key member of The Mamas & the Papas, for his talents both as a singer and songwriter, and for his acting career. He will be missed.
