David H. Koch, a leader in business and philanthropy, passed away on August 23, 2019 at the age of 79.
Born in 1940, David was the co-owner and executive vice president of Koch Industries, one of the largest privately held companies in the world. He and his brother Charles G. Koch diversified the family business, which was founded by their father Fred Koch in 1940, to include pollution control equipment and technologies, petroleum refining and chemicals, fibers and polymers, minerals, fertilizers, and pulp and paper.
David was also an accomplished philanthropist who generously supported numerous causes including medical research, environmental organizations, education, veterans and law enforcement, and the arts. He famously donated $185 million to New York’s Lincoln Center, and he committed more than US$1 billion to cancer research.
David was a passionate advocate for liberty, breaking ranks from the Libertarian Party in his later years. He was proud of his sons, staying true to his charitable roots, and leaving an impressive legacy.
David died peacefully at his home in Southampton, New York, surrounded by his loving family. He is survived by his wife Julia, his brother Charles, and his three sons, David Jr., John, and Wyatt.
