David Hilbert (1862-1943) died in Göttingen on February 14, 1943 at the age of 81. He was one of the most influential and prominent mathematicians of the late 19th and early 20th century. He made many crucial advancements in mathematics, including the study of linear algebra, calculus of variations, arithmetic theory, and the foundations of mathematics. He was particularly famous for his presentation of a set of 23 unsolved problems in mathematics known as "Hilbert's Problems". He also published many famous works including Foundations of Geometry, Grundlagen der Geometrie and Intuitionistic Logic. He was awarded many honors and degrees throughout his career including the 1904 Akademie der Wissenschaften Berlin Prize, the 1921 Order Pour le Merite and was made an honorary student of the University of Göttingen in 1929. His legacy continues to inspire mathematicians today.
