David Dinkins, former Mayor of New York City, passed away on November 23, 2020, at the age of 93. Throughout his life, Mr. Dinkins advocated for social justice, and for the civil rights of people of all backgrounds, genders, and beliefs. He was born in 1927 in Trenton, New Jersey, and served in the Marine Corps in 1945. He went on to graduate from Howard University in Washington D.C., and earn a law degree from Brooklyn Law School in 1956. Mr. Dinkins worked in local New York politics prior to his election as Mayor in 1989, during which time he improved the safety of New York City, built a growing economy, and advanced the rights of its citizens. A standout moment in his career was the Kre Mobilization plan of 1990, which was his answer to the city’s crisis of rising crime and area abandonment. Following his retirement from politics in 1993, he served as the professor of public affairs at Columbia University’s School of International Public Affairs from 1995 to 2016. Always known for his dignity and integrity, David Dinkins will be remembered as a model of service and civility in public service. He is survived by his wife and two children.
