David Bowie, iconic singer-songwriter, actor and cultural phenomenon, died on January 10, 2016, in New York City. He was 69 years old. During his career, Bowie released 26 studio albums and sold an estimated 140 million records worldwide. He started as a folk-driven singer, but soon developed a unique mix of glam, folk, rock, soul and pop. He was also an accomplished and influential actor, taking roles such as Pontius Pilate in The Last Temptation of Christ and Jareth the Goblin King in Labyrinth. Bowie had an enormous influence on generation of music-lovers around the world, defined by his willingness to take risks and experiment with sounds and images. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1996 and his final album, Blackstar, was released on January 8, 2016, to critical acclaim. Bowie was a generous philanthropist, anonymously supporting numerous charities throughout his life. He was married to model Iman in 1992 and the couple had one daughter, Lexi Jones. David Bowie's life and legacy will live on for generations of fans.
