Dara Singh, a legendary Indian wrestler and actor, passed away on July 12, 2012 at the age of 83. Born on November 19, 1928 in Dharmchandpur, Punjab, Singh moved to Mumbai in 1952 in search of a career in the film industry. He started his career as a wrestler in a Refugee Camp in Punjab, before going on to become a popular actor in the Hindi film industry. He appeared in more than 90 films throughout his acting career, often playing characters of righteous masculinity who triumphed in the end. He was a formidable wrestler as well, and in 1960 he won the Asian Wrestling Championship title. He went on to win many Indian wrestling championships, and was the last competitive wrestler to use the ‘khusti’ style of wrestling. Singh will be fondly remembered by his fans and remembered for his contribution to the Indian film industry and wrestling. He is survived by his sons Vindu Dara Singh and Parduman Singh.
