Daniel Johnston, renowned singer, songwriter, visual artist, and poet, passed away on September 10, 2019, aged 58.
Johnston got his start in music in the early 1980s in Austin, Texas. He first achieved cult status in the underground alternative rock scene of Austin and throughout the US with his self-made tapes. Johnston's works gained mainstream attention with the release of his sixth album, “Hi, How Are You” in 1983.
Johnston was known for his vivid recordings of raw emotion and struggle in tracks such as “True Love Will Find You in the End” and “Devil Town.” He found inspiration in a wide range of influences, from the Beatles to David Bowie, and heavily featured the synthesizer in his work. He also produced visuals arts, animations, and short films.
Johnston worked with several prominent musicians during his career, including Kurt Cobain, Sonic Youth, and Wilco. He wrote and produced works for a number of feature films, including “Home Movies” and “Just Like in the Movies.” His songs have been covered by musicians such as Tom Waits, Yo La Tengo, and Wilco.
Johnston is survived by his mother, Mabel, his brother, Dick Johnston, sister-in-law, Margery, and four nieces and nephews.
