American writer Dalton Trumbo, born December 9th, 1905, passed away on September 10th, 1976, aged 70. Trumbo was a successful novelist, screenwriter, and social activist. He is best known for his Academy Award–winning work on the romantic drama Roman Holiday, the adventure epic The Brave One, and the war picture Spartacus. Trumbo was also the leader of the "Hollywood Ten" — a group of writers and directors who refused to testify before the House Un-American Activities Committee in 1947 and were blacklisted as a result. Throughout his career, Trumbo received critical acclaim for his work, including Academy Award nominations for his screenplays for André De Toth's detective drama, He Ran all the Way, and Stanley Kubrick's epic war film, Paths of Glory. His work earned him multiple lifetime achievement awards, as well as honorary degrees from the University of Colorado and its College of Arts and Media. Trumbo was also a passionate and vocal political activist, supporting freedom of speech and clarifying the constitutional right of citizens to participate in activism. His efforts to protect the civil rights of others earned him the National Civil Liberties Award from the American Civil Liberties Union. He is survived by his sons, Christopher and Nikola.
