On September 18, 1961, Swedish diplomat Dag Hammarskjöld sadly passed away at the age of 56. Born on July 29th, 1905 in Jönköping, Sweden, Hammarskjöld studied economics and law at the University of Uppsala and went on to become a statesman known for his dedication to peace. In 1953, he was appointed as the second Secretary-General of the United Nations, and led two successful terms. He was awarded the Nobel Prize for Peace in 1961. As the UN Secretary-General, Dag Hammarskjöld put tremendous effort into fighting for the international safety and integrity of Africa. He worked hard to mediate between different countries by strengthening the UN's political and economic presence. His contribution to peace is recognized by his famous quote, "We all have within us a center of stillness surrounded by silence.” Dag Hammarskjöld’s memory will live on in his legacy of working for a better world. He will be greatly missed.
