On June 16, 2008, Cyd Charisse, legendary dancer and actress, passed away at the age of 86. The daughter of two dancers, Charisse began her career as a soloist in the Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo in the 1930s. In 1945, she starred in her first Hollywood movie, preceded by notable appearances in Anchors Aweigh and Ziegfeld Follies. In Marilyn Monroe's "Diamonds Are A Girl's Best Friend" number in Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, Charisse shined as she did in the entirety of her long screen career. Charisse's numerous films, many in partnership with Fred Astaire, included The Band Wagon, Brigadoon, It's Always Fair Weather, and Silk Stockings. Her natural sense of rhythm and energy, her sharp comic timing, and her quiet grace combined to make every performance unforgettable. In 2004, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences recognized the importance of Charisse's contributions to the film industry with an Honorary Oscar. Charisse is survived by her husband Tony Martin and by the long legacy of her talent.
