Cormac McCarthy, one of the most influential authors of the 20th and 21st centuries, passed away on June 13th, 2023 in Winchester, Kentucky. He was 89 years old. Originally from Tennessee, McCarthy made a name for himself with gritty, post-apocalyptic novels and literary masterpieces such as Blood Meridian, No Country for Old Men, and The Road. His 10 novels, most of which take place in the American West, established him as a seminal figure in postmodern literature and earned him a Pulitzer Prize. McCarthy was known for his minimalist writing style and avoidance of sentimentality. He created works that explored human suffering, isolation and morality and many hailed him as a modern-day Hemingway. His work has been adapted into several critically-acclaimed films, most notably No Country for Old Men in 2007 which went on to win four Academy Awards. The legacy of McCarthy's work will be honored for generations to come and his death comes as a great loss to the literary world.
