Colonel Harland Sanders, better known as the Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC) founder, died on December 16th, 1980, at the age of 90. Besides being the founder of the world-famous KFC chain, he was also a philanthropist, businessman, and cook. Born in 1890 in Henryville, Indiana, Sanders began his journey in the culinary world at the age of five, when he began learning to cook from his father. Throughout his life, he collected special recipes from his travels throughout the South. In 1930, at the age of 40, he founded Sanders Cafe in Corbin, Kentucky, where he first served his signature dish-a fried chicken seasoned with a secret blend of 11 herbs and spices. Over the years, Sanders developed a successful restaurant business, which eventually became the KFC franchise. In 1964, Colonel Sanders sold his business to a group of investors led by John Y. Brown Jr. and Jack C. Massey for $2 million. This marked the beginning of the KFC transition into a global enterprise and its expansion to more than 25,000 locations around the world. Throughout his life, Colonel Sanders was honored for his many accomplishments, being awarded with Kentucky Colonel status by Governor Ruby Laffoon, and receiving the Horatio Alger Award in 1973. He died in 1980 at the age of 90 in Shelbyville, Kentucky. He is survived by his two daughters, Margaret and Mildred. His legacy will live on through KFC's global success.
