The acting world is poorer with the passing of Colleen Dewhurst, an extraordinary and versatile stage and film performer who passed away on August 22, 1991, at the age of 67. Dewhurst's career spanned over 40 years on Broadway, earning her four Tony Award nominations (winning for her performance in The au Pair Man in 1973). She also starred in films such as The Far Country (1954) opposite James Stewart and Coming Home (1978) alongside Jane Fonda and Jon Voight, winning an Oscar nomination and a Golden Globe for her role. Her stage work was varied, ranging from musicals like Annie Get Your Gun (1966) to Shakespearean roles such as Volumnia in Coriolanus (1972). She was a fixture on television throughout the 1970s and 1980s in a variety of roles, from recurring characters like the mother-in-law on Murphy Brown to guest appearances on The Golden Girls, Moonlighting, and Law & Order. A dedicated and passionate performer, Dewhurst was widely admired for her professional work and her warmth both on and off the stage. She is survived by her two sons from her first marriage and her third husband, actor and director George C. Scott.

I wanted a perfect ending. Now I’ve learned, the hard way, that some poems don’t rhyme, and some stories don’t have a clear beginning, middle, and end. Life is about not knowing, having to change, taking the moment and making the best of it, without knowing what’s going to happen next. Delicious ambiguity. Gilda Radner
