Colin Luther Powell, four-star general, Secretary of State, and statesman, died on October 18th, 2021 at the age of 84. General Powell served with distinction in both the United States Army and the public service. He rose quickly in the Army, having attended the City College of New York (CCNY) and the Graduate School of the City University of New York. Over four decades of service, General Powell held a variety of important posts in the U.S. government, including Secretary of State, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and National Security Advisor. He is widely regarded as an important bridge between the military and civilian leadership. He served in the administrations of Presidents Reagan, George H.W. Bush, Bill Clinton, and George W. Bush. He is perhaps best known for his leadership in the first Gulf War of 1991, when his influential recommendations to President Bush carried the day for a decisive allied victory. He also made an indelible impact on public policy with his vision of an America that embraces diversity and opportunity. His advocacy of public service and volunteerism made its mark in our national life. He leaves behind a proud legacy of service, patriotism, and accomplishment.
