We regret to inform you of the passing of Cole Porter, the celebrated composer, songwriter and playwright, on October 15, 1964. He is survived by his wife of sixteen years, Linda Porter. Cole Porter was born on June 9, 1891 in Peru, Indiana. Launching his career as a songwriter in 1914, Porter wrote nearly 900 songs, many of which were incorporated into his plays. Some of his most famous works include “I Get a Kick out of You,” “Anything Goes,” “Begin the Beguine,” and “Night and Day.” Porter was admitted to the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1971. Porter’s talent caught the attention of Hollywood, and his music was featured in more than thirty Hollywood films. He was nominated for both an Academy Award and Emmy Award. Porter’s success was not without hardship. After his severe leg injury from a horse riding accident in 1937, he was in pain for decades. Despite his health impairments, he continued to write music and host dinner parties at his Manhattan apartment. His passionate spirit never slowed down. Porter passed away at his home in Santa Monica, California, where he and Linda lived in his last years. He was 73 years old. We remember Cole Porter’s spirit, his voice, and his elegant and timeless music. May he rest in peace.
