Cliff Arquette, an iconic American actor and comedian, has died at age 68 on September 23, 1974. He is best known for his many appearances on television programs such as The Hollywood Squares, The Tonight Show, and The Ed Sullivan Show. Cliff, born December 27, 1905, began his career in comedy in the early 1930s, performing on stage with comedians such as Jack Benny, George Burns, Groucho Marx, and Bob Hope. He created the popular character "Charlie Weaver" for radio and television in the 1950s and 1960s and was a regular panelist on The Hollywood Squares for 13 years. His character was a humorous representation of a rural country bumpkin fondly referred to as "Uncle Cliff." He was dedicated to his craft, and was named the President of the International Guild for Variety Artists. During the 1950s and 1960s, he was frequently seen on variety and game shows, sometimes as himself, and at other times as "Charlie Weaver." Cliff will be remembered fondly by family, fans, and friends for his sharp wit, endearing charm, and love of comedy.
