Claudette Colbert, a three-time Academy Award nominated actress, died on July 30, 1996, at her home in Barbados at the age of 92. She was born in France in 1903, and began her career as an actress on the New York stage in the 1920s. In 1934, she made her debut in a major motion picture, starring in the now-classic comedy, “It Happened One Night.” With her beauty, versatility, and comedic timing, Colbert quickly established herself as one of Hollywood’s most reliable leading ladies. She starred in numerous films during the 1930s and 1940s such as “Cleopatra”, “The Gilded Lily”, and “Drums Along the Mohawk”. Colbert was recognized for her work with an Academy Award for Best Actress in 1934, as well as two additional nominations for Best Actress for the films “Private Worlds” (1935) and “Since You Went Away” (1944). Throughout her career, Colbert was never limited to roles in comedies – she was also capable of portraying dramatic roles, such as in her critically acclaimed 1942 psychological drama, “Tonight or Never.” Aside from her career as a leading lady, she also engaged in her own philanthropic endeavors, setting up the Claudette Colbert Foundation to aid children in need. Colbert, a trailblazing actress and humanitarian, is remembered and celebrated as one of the greats of Hollywood’s Golden Age.
