On May 30th, 1967, Claude Rains passed away at the age of 77 after a long and successful career as an actor. Rains was born in London in 1889 and began acting in the West End theatre as a young man. Eventually, he was cast in films such as The Invisible Man and The Wolf Man, his characters becoming regarded as some of the most iconic figures in the history of horror cinema. Much of his career was spent acting for the Hollywood studios. He played Humphrey Bogart’s foil in four films, most notably in the classic classic film Casablanca. From roles in Lawrence of Arabia, Mr. Smith Goes to Washington, and Notorious, Rains showcased a remarkable range in his acting repertoire. Rains was celebrated with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and was nominated for three Academy Awards. He will be remembered for his talent and wonderful performances that impacted the art of acting and greatly contributed to motion picture entertainment. Rains is survived by his wife and four children.
