Cicely Tyson, an award-winning actress and civil rights activist, passed away on January 28th, 2021 at the age of 87. Tyson began her career as a model and moved to acting in the 1950s. She went on to take leading roles in television, film, and theater, earning her several Emmy, Golden Globe, and Tony Awards, among many accolades. Tyson worked throughout her life to bring attention to social issues, advocating for roles for African-American woman in entertainment and beyond. In 2016 she was presented with the Presidential Medal of Freedom—the nation’s highest civilian award—in recognition of her work in the civil rights movement. The impact of Tyson’s work continues to be felt and her legacy as an actor and humanitarian will leave a lasting imprint.
