Chuck Berry, a prolific musician and pioneer of rock 'n' roll, died on March 18, 2017, at the age of 90.
Mr. Berry was born in St. Louis, Missouri on October 18, 1926. After he left school early, he took up music in earnest and formed a band, The Johnnie Johnson Trio, in 1952. He was soon signed to Chess Records and released his first single, “Maybellene”, in 1955.
Throughout his career, his music was a fusion of blues, country, teens/pop, and showmanship, and he wrote and recorded such classic songs as “Maybellene”, “Roll Over Beethoven”, “Rock and Roll Music”, and “Johnny B. Goode”. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1986, and he received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Recording Academy in 1984.
Mr. Berry was a beloved figure in the music industry, enjoying praise and adoration from a range of fans, peers, and critics. He will be remembered fondly by his family, friends, and everyone who enjoyed his music.
