Chief Dan George, Chief of the Squamish Nation from 1951 to 1963, famed Canadian actor, and beloved public figure, passed away on September 23rd, 1981 at the age of 82. Born as Geswanouth Slahoot in 1899, Chief Dan George was a chief of the Tsleil-Waututh Nation as well as the Squamish Nation in British Columbia. He was well-known and beloved amongst the Indigenous community, and was at the forefront of modernizing the Indian Act and promoting Indigenous education and involvement in politics. He was also well-known for his activism in protecting his people's land and rights, and his ideas of unifying the Indigenous people of Canada. His acting career began when he was cast in a minor role in the film Little Big Man. He would go on to win the Genie Award for Best Actor for his portrayal of "Old Antoine" in the film The Antoine Fathers. He was also awarded with an honorary Oscar, a star on Canada's Walk of Fame, and the Order of Canada. Chief Dan George will be remembered as an inspirational and groundbreaking figure, and his legacy will live on through the generations.
