Chiang Kai-shek, former leader of the Republic of China and leader of the Kuomintang party, passed away at his home in Taipei, Taiwan on April 5th, 1975 at the age of 87. Born on October 31, 1887 in Xikou village in Zhejiang, China, Chiang Kai-shek was a revolutionary soldier, statesman, and political leader. He became a major figure in the Chinese revolution, eventually becoming commander-in-chief of the Chinese forces in 1926. He was the leader of the Kuomintang party from 1925 until his death. After the founding of People’s Republic of China in 1949, Chiang Kai-shek and the remnants of the Republic of China fled to Taiwan and he became the leader of the Taiwanese government. Chiang Kai-shek’s rule in Taiwan lasted until his death in 1975. During this period, he finally officially declared the end of the Chinese civil war in 1947 and established the Republic of China on Taiwan. Chiang Kai-shek was an important and influential figure of his time, leaving behind a powerful legacy in China and Taiwan. He was greatly respected by his supporters, and his death was mourned by many. He is survived by his five children, four sons, and one daughter.
