It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Charles Thomas Munger, who died on November 28th, 2023 at the age of 99. Charlie spent his life dedicated to business success, public service, and philanthropy. He was born in Omaha, Nebraska, on June 24, 1924 and earned a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics from the University of Michigan. He was an officer in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II, and later graduated with a Juris Doctor degree from Harvard Law School. He passed the California Bar Exam in 1948 and went on to practice law with the firm of Wright & Garrett. His most notable entrepreneurial venture was as an investment partner with Warren Buffett at Berkshire Hathaway. He served on the company’s board of directors from 1978 to 2021 and has co-managed the company with Warren Buffett since 1978. Charlie’s long list of accolades includes the acceptance of honorary degrees from the Universities of Michigan, California-Berkeley, California-Los Angeles, and Stanford. In 2013, he was inducted into the Business Hall of Fame. In addition to his business success, Charlie was an active philanthropist, making generous donations to a variety of organizations such as Harvard University, the University of Michigan, and the Los Angeles Museum of Contemporary Art. Charlie is remembered as an innovative business thinker, passionate philanthropist, and true leader in the investment industry. He will be deeply missed.
