Charles was born in Jacksonville, Texas and worked a variety of professions over his lifetime, such as a professional gambler, oil driller, and private investigator. He was married three times and had a family of children, including actor Woody Harrelson. Charles was known for a variety of controversial endeavors including being found guilty of assassination-for-hire of federal judge John H. Wood Jr. He passed away in LR Mission Unit in Livingston, Texas. His family remembers him fondly.
