It is with great sadness that the world bids farewell to Carroll Hall Shelby, an American automotive designer, racing driver, and entrepreneur, who passed away on May 10, 2012 at the age of 89. He began his career as a driver in 1952, vowing to win the 24 Hours of Le Mans race. He achieved this in 1959, co-driving an Aston Martin DBR1 with Roy Salvadori. In 1961, he retired from driving to focus on developing performance cars to win on the track and to sell to the public. In 1965, Shelby won the 24 Hours of Daytona and 12 Hours of Sebring with a one-two-three finish. He best known and most admired achievements were the development of the venerated Ford Mustang-based Shelby GT350, GT500, and GT500 Super Snake, and the later series of Shelby Cobras, all of which are recognized and admired for their performance and legacy. Shelby's legacy lives on through his work, his cars, and the hearts of his many friends, family and fans.
