With great sadness, the Kingdom of Romania announces the passing of Carol II, King of Romania, who died on April 4th, 1953, at the age of 59. Carol was born on October 15th, 1893 in Sinaia, Romania. He was the eldest son of Ferdinand I, and his first wife, Marie of Edinburgh. In 1914, Carol served as a lieutenant during World War I, but truthfully had little interest in ruling until the death of his father in 1927. He later became a popular leader, admired by both Romanians and their neighbors. In 1930, Carol ousted his son, Michael, from the throne, and was crowned King of Romania. After serving for over 10 years, he was forced to abdicate due to concerns about the security of Romania and the country’s relationship with Germany prior to World War II. Despite this, he remained a vital figure in Romanian politics and culture, playing an important role in the modernization of the country until his death in 1953. Carol was well-known for his love of the arts, and was famously an incredible dancer. He held a number of royal titles, including Grand Voivode and Prince of Hohenzollern. He is remembered as a strong leader who helped move Romania toward the modern age. Carol is survived by his widow, Queen Helen of Romania, his sons Michael and Mircea, and his stepson Nicholas Medforth-Mills. He was predeceased by his first wife, Princess Helen of Greece. His legacy will continue to live on through his descendants and in the people of Romania.
