It is with deep sadness we announce the passing of Don Van Vliet, commonly known as Captain Beefheart. Vliet passed away on Friday, December 17th, 2010, at the age of 69. Born on January 15th, 1941 in Glendale, California, Vliet was a masterful singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, poet, and visual artist. He earned his nickname as Captain Beefheart while still a young boy, and the pseudonym went on to define most of his major accomplishments. Musically, Vliet’s career began in his teens when he released a series of albums blending rock, blues, and jazz. This work was to solidify Vliet's status as a prominent figure in the avant-garde and experimental rock scenes. In 1969, he released his seminal album "Trout Mask Replica" which further established his prominence in modern music, though critical reactions to the release were mixed. No matter what, it's not hard to deny the impact of Vliet's work. During his nearly forty year musical career, Vliet created complex works that continue to influence musicians and artists to this day. Vliet is survived by his wife, Jan, and their son, Alex. He will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege to know him and his art.
