On 2021-12-05 00:00:00 UTC, Bob Dole passed away after 98 years of life. Robert Joseph Dole was born on July 22, 1923, in Russell, Kansas. At the age of two, he contracted polio, which left his left arm shrivelled and paralyzed. Despite the medical setback, Dole attended the University of Kansas and earned his law degree. He enlisted in the United States Army during World War II and, despite suffering war injuries, reenlisted during the Korean War. Dole served with distinction and was the recipient of two Purple Hearts, the Bronze Star, and the Combat Infantryman Badge. Dole began his political career in 1950 as a Russell County Attorney and later served three terms in the United States House of Representatives. In 1968, he was elected to the United States Senate and served for 27 years. During his tenure he aided in the passage of numerous small business and veteran reforms. From 1974-1979, Dole was also the Senate Majority Leader. In 1996, Dole sought the office of President of the United States. He lost the election to incumbent President Bill Clinton. Dole spent his later years working with veterans groups and advocacy organizations. His lifetime of service was recognized in 2012, when tensions between both parties prompted President Barack Obama to award Dole the Presidential Medal of Freedom. Dole was a decorated veteran, public servant, and civic-minded leader. He will be remembered for his dedication to service and his commitment to making a positive impact on the lives of Americans. He is survived by his wife, former United States Senator Elizabeth Dole.
