With great sadness we announce the passing of Birsa Munda, an inspirational leader and freedom fighter who fought for the rights of his people and the freedom of his homeland. He died on June 9th, 1900 at the age of 24. Birsa Munda was a leader of the Indian independence movement in the 19th century. He was born in 1875 into the Munda tribe, a marginalised group in the Indian state of Bihar. He quickly rose to prominence as a community leader dedicated to the upliftment of his people, fighting to ensure their basic rights and dignities were respected. Birsa became a leader of the Millenarian movement called “Bhagwan Birsa Munda panth” and was follower of Vaishnavism a form of Hinduism. He worked tirelessly to protect his people from exploitation and attempted to modernise their culture. He also published pamphlets about the movement, including his legendary treatise “Satya Shodhak”, and organised strikes and boycotts to disrupt the British colonialists' agenda. His legacy remains as an inspiration for people of all backgrounds who value freedom and justice. He will be deeply missed.

Let children walk with Nature, let them see the beautiful blendings and communions of death and life, their joyous inseparable unity, as taught in woods and meadows, plains and mountains and streams of our blessed star, and they will learn that death is stingless indeed, and as beautiful as life.
