On February 26, 1994, Bill Hicks, a renowned standup comic, passed away at the age of 32 after a lengthy battle with pancreatic cancer. A native of Houston, Texas, Hicks' career in standup took off in the mid-1980s when he regularly performed in clubs and venues around the U.S. He was known for using humor to expose American culture and its various hypocrisies. His sharp social commentary was delivered in an edgy and passionate style which ultimately made him an important figure in the '90s counterculture. Hicks was a frequent contributor to TV and radio shows, and he also released several comedy albums and videos in addition to touring the world performing live. In 1993, he did his first performance in the United Kingdom, making an instant impact on audiences and critics alike. He was named one of Comedy Central's "100 Greatest Stand-Ups of All Time" in 2004. Hicks is survived by his father, brother and sister, and will be remembered fondly by fans worldwide.
