William H. Gates Sr., one of the world's leading philanthropists, passed away on September 14, 2020 at the age of 94. William — better known as Bill — was born on November 30, 1925 in Bremerton, Washington. He served in the U.S. Army from 1943 to 1946 and earned his degree in 1950 from the University of Washington. From 1956-1982, he worked as an attorney, and co-founded the law firm of Shidler McBroom & Gates in 1964. Bill is well-known as a generous philanthropist,having provided aid to numerous organizations, including the Boys and Girls Clubs of America, the United Way, the Global Fund, and the Weyerhaeuser Co. Foundation. He was also a strong advocate for civil rights throughout his life. Bill was predeceased by his wife of nearly 70 years, Mary Maxwell Gates. He is survived by his three children: daughter Kristianne Blake and sons William H. Gates II and John Craig Gates; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. He will be remembered as a loving husband, father, and grandfather, as well as an inspirational philanthropist whose legacy of generosity and compassion will be felt for years to come.
