We regret to announce the passing of beloved jazz pianist Bill Evans, who died on September 15, 1980 at the age of 51. Born William John Evans on August 16, 1929 in Plainfield, New Jersey, Evans was raised by his Armenian mother and Welsh father. He attended Southeastern Louisiana University and graduated with a degree in instrumental performance. His formal jazz training came from performing with trombonist and bandleader Tony Aless and bassist Carl Adair. Evans was a key figure in the development of modal jazz, expressing himself through his beautiful chord voicings and melancholy melodies. He worked with prominent industry figures like Tony Bennett, Miles Davis, and Chet Baker throughout the 1950s and 1960s. His trio innovated the jazz trio format, leading to his groundbreaking 1961 live album Sunday at the Village Vanguard. An influential and pioneering musician, Evans’ work and influence will continue to be appreciated and enjoyed in the years to come.

Those men who, in war, seek to preserve their lives at any rate commonly die with shame and ignominy, while those who look upon death as common to all, and unavoidable, and are only solicitous to die with honour, oftener arrive at old age and, while they live, live happier. Xenophon
