Benigno Aquino III, former President of the Philippines, passed away at the age of 61 on June 24th, 2021. He was born on February 8th, 1960 in Manila. After completing his degree in economics at Ateneo de Manila University, he served as a member of the House of Representatives from 1998 to 2007 and was elected to the Senate in 2007. On June 9th, 2010, he won the Presidential Election in the Philippines and started his 6-year term as President from July 1st, 2010. He was the 15th and the last President of the country under the 1975 Constitution. While in office, President Aquino III introduced several progressive reforms, including the enactment of a reproductive health law, the Bangsamoro Basic Law, and the creation of a Freedom of Information executive order. He also pushed for greater accountability in public service, including the prosecution of corrupt officials. Under his administration, the country achieved a record 6.4% GDP growth in 2012. After leaving office in June 30th, 2016, President Aquino III devoted his remaining years to advocating for better public service and transparency in government. He will be remembered for his dedication and commitment to advancing democracy in the Philippines.
