Benazir Bhutto, born June 21, 1953, and former Prime Minister of Pakistan, died on Wednesday, December 27, 2007, at 54 years old. Bhutto, born in Karachi, Pakistan, the eldest daughter of the then-Prime Minister Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, was educated at Harvard University and Oxford University. She was a deeply respected political leader in her homeland and the first female leader of a Muslim nation. Bhutto served twice as Prime Minister of Pakistan from 1988-1990 and 1993-1996 beforebeing removed from office by President Pervez Musharraf in 1999. Later, Musharraf pardoned Bhutto and allowed her to live in exile outside of Pakistan until her return to Islamabad in 2007. Her death came as a shock to her family, the Pakistan people, and those involved with world politics. During her career, Bhutto championed a number of progressive and democratic initiatives in her homeland, as well as helping to bring a greater understanding of the Muslim faith in most western countries. Throughout her career, Bhutto played a key role in attempting to arrive at a peaceful resolution between Pakistan and India, and her efforts were remembered by many of her colleagues in the political world. Bhutto left behind her husband, Asif Ali Zardari, three children, and a legacy of ambition and determination that her homeland will remember forever.
