Ben Johnson, beloved husband, father, and member of the Alberta and Canadian track and field community, passed away on April 8, 1996 at the age of 77 in Edmonton, Alberta. Ben was born on February 12, 1919 and attended university in Calgary, where he was an active member of the track team. After his schooling was completed, he moved to Edmonton and became a respected coach and mentor within the track and field community. Throughout his life and career, Ben championed multiple Olympic, Commonwealth and World Championships athletes and teams. He was also the first coach in Canada to have a team recognized for completing a 4 x 100 relay in less than 45 seconds. He was an ardent supporter of young athletes and was frequently seen in the stands cheering on his athletes, friends and family. His enthusiasm was infectious and his impact on the track and field community of Alberta was significant and will be remembered by many. Ben is survived by his wife, children, grand-children and many other extended family members and friends. He will be dearly missed by all who knew him.
