William Barclay "Bat" Masterson, the prolific and colorful Wild West figure, passed away on October 25, 1921. He was 67 years old. Masterson was born in Henryville, Canada on November 26, 1853. Moving to New York City in 1872, he worked as a buffalo hunter and gambler before becoming one of the best-known lawmen of the American West. He served as the sheriff of Ford County, Kansas and later on the city marshal of Trinidad, Colorado. He received notoriety as a professional gambler and boxing promoter during his tenure in Trinidad from 1879 to 1887. Masterson later moved to Denver, Colorado, where he pursued a variety of business activities, including serving as a banker, running a hotel, and writing a newspaper column about the Wild West. He continued to make appearances in magazines and newspapers, affirming his status as an icon of the old West. Masterson was the subject of numerous legends and tall tales during his lifetime and is remembered affectionately as a daring lawman and adventurer. He will be deeply missed.
