Born on February 8, 1934, in Kew, Australia, Barry is best known for his characters Dame Edna Everage and Sir Les Patterson; humous alter egos, uncompromisingly Australian in context. He rose to fame in the 1960s with an innovative and topical satire of Australian culture; a style based largely in his strong theatrical background. His unique talent brought great success, with Humphries taking his shows to London, Broadway and beyond. Honouring his work, Humphries received accolades including two MO awards, two BAFTAs, two Helpmann Awards, multiple Logie awards and a knighthood. He was also awarded a Companion of the Order of Australia, one of Australia’s highest civilian honours. His contribution to entertainment and culture extended beyond stage and screen. He authored 37 books and published his memoir, More Please, in 2020. He wrote and wrote the dialogues for 1985 feature film, Fairy Tale: A True Story, and hosted several music series on British television. Humphries was a dedicated supporter of the Australian Performing Arts, donating funds to numerous initiatives to help young actors, musicians, creatives and dancers. He has left an unrivalled legacy and will be fondly remembered.
