It is with sadness that we share the news of the passing of Babe Ruth, one of the most iconic baseball players in history. On August 16, 1948, at age 53, Ruth passed away. Ruth, born George Herman Ruth Jr. in 1895 in Baltimore, Maryland, began his professional baseball career in 1914 when he joined the Baltimore Orioles as a pitcher. He was later purchased by the Boston Red Sox in the same year. In 1919, the Red Sox sold Ruth to the New York Yankees, where he blossomed into an international star. Famed for his home run prowess and larger-than-life personality, Ruth earned the moniker "The Bambino" for his remarkable contributions to the baseball world. During his career, Ruth achieved numerous records, including 714 career home runs - a record that held until 1974 - and a .690 career slugging percentage. He was elected as a charter member of the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1936. Ruth was an undeniable talent and his contributions to the game of baseball will be remembered for many generations to come.
