Arnold Palmer, 1927–2016 Arnold Palmer, one of the greatest and most beloved figures in golf, passed away on September 25, 2016 at the age of 87. Palmer, born in Latrobe, Pennsylvania, the son of a greenskeeper-club professional, first learned the game of golf as a caddie. The strong bond of friendship he made with his boss and mentor heavily influenced Palmer’s career, extending beyond golf and inspiring many. Palmer is regarded as one of the most significant figures in the history of golf and is known around the world simply as ‘The King’. He won 62 PGA Tour titles, encompassing seven major championships between 1958 and 1964. He first joined the Professional Golfers’ Association (PGA) tour in 1955 and won the Canadian Open that same year, a sign of much greater success to come. He was the first of six players to win all four of the modern major championships of golf (Masters, U.S. Open, British Open, and PGA Championship). He was one of golf’s most charismatic players and remains the rare athlete whose stature exceeded the sports world. His commercial endorsements deal with companies such as Rolex, Pennzoil, and Hertz established him as a marketable star through the sixties and made him a household name. In addition to his career achievements, Palmer is also known for his philanthropic support of children’s health, his Passion for golf course design, and a deep commitment to his hometown Latrobe. He is remembered for both his skill on the golf course and his warm and friendly personality. Although his presence is missed, his legacy will not be forgotten.

I wanted a perfect ending. Now I’ve learned, the hard way, that some poems don’t rhyme, and some stories don’t have a clear beginning, middle, and end. Life is about not knowing, having to change, taking the moment and making the best of it, without knowing what’s going to happen next. Delicious ambiguity. Gilda Radner
