Anne Bancroft, iconic film and stage actress, died on June 6th, 2005, at the age of 73. She won an Oscar for her portrayal of the iconic Mrs. Robinson in the classic 1967 movie The Graduate. Born Anna Maria Louisa Italiano on September 17, 1931, in the Bronx, New York, she quickly found stardom after her breakout role in the Broadway play Two for the Seesaw. Her success in the stage carried over to the film industry with her acclaimed performances in The Miracle Worker, The Pumpkin Eater, and The Little Drummer Girl. Awarded many accolades throughout her life, Bancroft was honored with an obie and a Tony award. In 1962 she was presented with the New York Film Critics Circle Award for Best Actress. She also earned an Emmy Award for her performance in Deep in My Heart and an Oscar for her career defining role in The Graduate. Bancroft is survived by her beloved husband, actor Mel Brooks, and her son Max. She will be remembered for her fiery spirit, her astounding legacy on the stage and the big screen, and her incredible commitment to her craft.
